Final Fantasy VIII is a masterpiece compared to Final Fantsy VII. The graphics are 3 times better then FFVII. The backround has better detail. The graphics of the cutscenes are very good, see for your self:

You start out with Squall Leonheart which is a student at an army academy. His classmates are Zell Dincht, Selphie Tilmitt, Rinoa Heartilly and Quistis Trepe. You will eventually graduate and the do missions. The game take up to 40hr to finnish, so if you are not devoted to the game it'll take a long time to finish. During the game you will take some test to boost your ranking so you'll earn more gils(money). when facing enemies there are numerours of spectacular muves and magis you could. It will take an hour to master the game and plan your techniques/stratergy.
